a name to call: james brown

i just opened my email inbox to discover that the godfather of soul himself has passed. i’m still looking for better reports to post, but here is an excerpt of what i’ve found so far:

James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured “Godfather of Soul,” whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said the cause of death was uncertain. “We really don’t know at this point what he died of,” he said.

  1. Nite,

I just came to tell you my GRE score, and I’m finding out James Brown is dead!! that’s crazy man, its funny how people get old but you don’t really think about it because they’re so much larger than life…

PS 620 Verbal, can’t remember what I got on quanatative, and i haven’t gotten analytical back yet…but all in all they’re definitely easier than the SAT’s I took em cold turkey and didn’t feel overwhelmed

  2. ha ha, my bad nite, there I go with gender bias, four years at Vassar have taught me nothin!

I agree, one of the sadder legacies James Brown will leave is of misogyny and drug abuse…that will probably be the exclusive topic of discussion among the right wing shock jocks who are flailing desperately for stories that don’t point to the White House’s ensuing meltdown. People, especially artists, are complex individuals, often because they are so aware of the contradictions human beings possess.

I don’t know if you’re a fan of August Wilson, but his protoge wrote a play called Hambone. There is a character who meets James Brown in prison and he inspires him to write a song that goes something like

    “Everybody stay sleepwalking
    brother, you gotta wake up”

I don’t know, it just made me think about the way James Brown, and alot of the old school could be subversive without being really obvious about it, because they had to be.

now so many hip hop artists, are, as Obama put it “square” in their values…its dang shame.

  3. The death of Soul Brother Number 1 makes it offical.. it’s the end of an era. Enough with finger pointing.

  6. Hi Anayah. Its Adam.

This is, by a large margin, the least likely thing that has ever happened.
